Our Process

Spokane Galvanizing works with engineers, fabricators, and specifiers before and during the project.

After the steel has been delivered to our 26 acre facility in Airway Heights, we unload the steel and properly document the load. Receiving checklist. The steel is inspected to ensure it has adequate vent and drain holes (ASTM385 standard) before heading into the shop. ASTM385 Standards.

The steel is then racked or hung and sent to the staging area, where surface preparation takes place.  Surface preparation is imperative; zinc will not adhere to steel with any outside contaminates.

Surface preparation

STEP 1: Caustic cleaning - The material is immersed in Alkaline, a degreaser, which removes organic contaminants such as dirt, grease, and oil from the metal.

STEP 2: Rinsing - The material is rinsed in water.

STEP 3. Pickling - The material is immersed in Sulfuric Acid which removes mill scale and rust (oxides) from the steel.

STEP 4. Rinsing - The material is rinsed in water.

STEP 5. Flux - This is the last step where the steel is immersed into a flux bath.  This prevents oxidation of the metal prior to entering the galvanizing bath (zinc) and also aids the galvanizing reaction during the hot-dip galvanizing process.

Once free of contaminates, the clean steel is put into the High Grade Zinc bath at a temperatures of 850 degrees Fahrenheit which metallurgically bonds the zinc coating to the steel.  Final steps include cleaning, taking certifications and weighing the product before shipping.
